Mazatenango

After not riding for quite a while, it's a little difficult getting back into it. That's why we've only been riding 30 or 40 km a day but we figured by the third day we could make it the 64km to Mazatenango. We left the hotel early and biked uphill out of town. On the road you could barely hear yourself think because of all the beetles buzzing drying their wings. We had stepped into what seemed like a lush, humid, green jungle complete with vines hanging from trees. It was so beautiful. The road was not very flat but had decent grades so it was not too bad. I didn't do near the amount of complaining I had been doing the last couple days.

Sweet looking staircase leading to someone's house
We arrived in Mazatenango around lunch, picked up some groceries at the Maxi Dispensia which I think is the same as a Bodega Aurrura which is owned by WalMart...then biked onward to find the start of Carnival! The streets were mostly blocked off with people everywhere, a stage and lots of food. We decided to find a hotel, shower then enjoy the festivities. We got a room at the Tucan Hotel, showered but we were both so tired we made some food and fell asleep completely missing the party!
